Slight change in plans
The fall of Saigon marked the end of the Vietnam War and the unification of the country under communist rule. April 30th is a public holiday known as Reunification Day or Liberation Day or Ngay Giai Phong. Why am I posting this? First, it is a day for all to remember to honor the 58,000 americans and 2 million vietnamese that lost their lives fighting. Secondly, it was a significant "first day" of a new era for the Vietnamese. North and South had to reconcile and move forward to rebuild this war torn country. (more of how they did this in the next history lesson) Finally, it is the reason our travel has been delayed just a few days. All government offices are closed April 30th and May 1. May 1 is the International Labor Day. So, we will leave Bend April 28th and arrive in Hanoi on April 30th. We will celebrate these holidays with the Vietnamese, adjust to our new digs, time zone etc and meet Hadley on May 2nd.
